Citizens Police Academy (Week 1)

By Kelli Kyle

The Citizens Police Academy kicked off by with a tour of the police department building and a brief history on I-P-D.  Afterwards, the Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response gave attendees an inside look at some of the situations they have to deal with on a daily basis.

Participants also met I-P-D’s furriest officer. His full name is Albert Stanios, but you can call him Bert. He is the only police dog in the I-P-D K-9 unit. In a demonstration with his handler, Bert showed that he was all business. In this display, Bert apprehended an uncooperative suspect. Another police officer portrayed a criminal, while Bert’s handler gave the canine the command to step in.

Over the next seven weeks, participants in the academy will experience a ride along, SWAT team demonstration, and presentations on other police operations.
